The Real Reason Most BJJ Warm Ups Suck & Why People Hate Them

Today we have a BJJ question from a fellow Black Belt Coach, Bob, who is having trouble with one of his friends who also happens to be a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

Bob says that his buddy, the fellow black belt from another gym, is coming to train with him. Which he is happy about. However, his friend keeps showing up 45 minutes late to the classes he attends.

He interprets these late appearances as a form of laziness on his friend’s behalf, or maybe he just doesn’t want to do warmups. And he believes he does it because he’s a Black Belt and feels like he can do it. Regardless, he’s not sure what’s up.

At Bob’s gym, attendance is pretty strict, and he wants to know how I’d handle a situation where a someone is chronically late to classes and if I have ever faced a similar situation, and if so, how I dealt with it.

In the video I’ll explain what I think and give you some ideas on BJJ warmups too.

A Highly Effective Mount Position in a Street Fight or MMA

Today’s video comes as an answer to a recent question from a follower, and fellow Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Practitioner, named Steve.

Steve’s question to me is whether or not I believe you should go to a low Mount or if you should get to a high Mount which is very common and very effective in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

His question is focused on which mounted BJJ position, would be more effective in a Street fight situation, against an untrained person. So in the video I share some ideas on how to use mount in a Hand-to-hand fighting situation on DUH STREETZ. And I share why I really like low mount vs an untrained person.

I Got My Delusional Co-Worker to Try BJJ. . . Big Mistake!

Recently a subscriber of the channel, we will call him Bob, who has been training for over a year, messaged me to tell me about a crummy experience he had with a co-worker who he invited to the gym to start training BJJ.

Well, a few classes in, Bob’s coworker & Bob finally rolled.

In the Roll Bob takes it easy, even allowing his friend to submit him when they rolled. The issue began after the roll when Bob’s co-worker says “Hah, you couldn’t even get me.” This being said after their light roll (where Bob was just playing).

Well to make it worse, a few days later at their place of work, the co-worker also boasted about the roll against Bob & the Head Instructor; embarrassing Bob and leaving him frustrated about what to do next.

This obviously rubbed Bob the wrong way and he is wondering if he should: confront his co-worker directly about the issue, have a talk with the coach, let it go, or if I had any other ways to resolve the problem in mind…

The BJJ Position Where White Belts Go to Die

One of the most common messages I get from you guys, specifically the newer grapplers, is about something in the realm of White Belts having trouble with Side Control escapes.

Regardless of your prior grappling experience, White Belts of all backgrounds tend to struggle pretty often escaping side control and just feel stuck.

The tip that I am going to share with you in this video works for side control, mount, or any defensive position, but can be really useful for side control specifically.

This technique/idea made escaping side control way easier for me, and hopefully for you newer white belts watching, or anyone else, it can also be a useful idea that’ll help your game too.

Today’s question comes from a Karate Black Belt who trained in that martial art for 30 years. He’s now getting into BJJ.

How To Break Closed Guard Without Getting Swept

In today’s video I answer a recent question about breaking the closed guard in BJJ (Gi or No-GI), WITHOUT getting swept in the process.

In Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, the Closed Guard is one of the most dangerous positions to be stuck in. It’s also a great position for your opponent to sweep or submit you if you’re not careful.

Therefore, it’s important to try and approach it with caution and technique when breaking it.

This Guard Break is both beginner friendly and extremely effective (in my experience) and hopefully a useful idea for you to practice next time you’re in training.

I hope this helps.

BJJ Training Intensity VS Competition Intensity

Today’s BJJ question comes from Cody who is curious about if you can give 100% in training without going ultra-crazy and 100% intensity.

So in the video I share my ideas of why I can’t go 100% in training. Not that I don’t want to or that I choose not to, but why I simply can’t.

I also talk about different styles of training where 100% intensity isn’t needed and wouldn’t be helpful.

If you have a similar question, I hope this helps you out as well.

This Powerful Exercise Made My BJJ Goals & Marriage Better

Today’s question comes from a blue belt by the name of Tom who is curious about my advice on training BJJ while married.

Good question, since as us guys always joke “happy wife, happy life.”

Anyways, he’s wondering how to find the balance between taking care of his wife and training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu enough to do it at a competitive level.

Now, I don’t consider myself a marriage “Guru” or Counselor, but in this video, I’ll share how I found an important balance between my training and marriage. I’ll also share a simple exercise that I did with my wife that made my BJJ and my marriage better. So hopefully it will help you too if you’re in a similar situation.

Thanks for watching.

If You Play Butterfly Guard, Use This Simple Trick for Underhooks

Today’s video is a question from a viewer named Brandon who’s been playing Butterfly Guard in his BJJ classes.

He said he’s had a lot of success with it, but he says everyone is catching on and stopping his underhooks. So in the video I show a simple way to get the underhook even if the person is resisting. It’s something I’ve used a ton and has been very effective with my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, so I hope it is for your BJJ as well.

Thanks for watching.

This Depressed Guy Will Need BJJ “Therapy” Now, More Than Ever

Today’s question comes from Jose who is wondering if he should keep training BJJ while going through a divorce.

He worries that he may bring some baggage from his personal life into his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gym, that could lead to some not-so-fun interactions in training and doesn’t want to ruin his relationships at the gym as a result.

In the video I give Jose, and you guys, a story about similar situation that I went through in hopes to start a conversation & to help Jose out, even if it’s just a little helpful.

This is clearly a hard time for Jose, and I hope that he finds what he needs, gets through this whole situation, and is able to get back to his normal life as soon as possible. And if you’re experiencing a similar issue then I hope the video helps.
