White Belt Wrestler is Breaking The Spirits of Blue Belts in his BJJ Gym

In today’s Q&A I answer a question from a White Belt with a strong wrestling base who is breaking the spirits of some of the higher belts in his gym.

He says he’s been training for over a year (mostly no gi) and came into BJJ with a strong wrestling background. During rolling he says he’s able to give many of the higher belts fits and, in some cases, beat some of them.

Well, he noticed that after beating some of the higher belts they seemed discouraged.

So his question is, should he keep doing what he’s doing or take it easy on them?

In the video I’ll address this question and lay out why taking it easy on them would not be a good idea.

Why You Should Roll with BJJ White Belts Like It’s a Fight

Today’s video is from a BJJ White Belt who’s about 2 years into Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and says that he is always getting injured. His question is whether or not BJJ is even right for him. Possibly he’s too fragile or something.

Now I cannot answer that question, because who knows? I’ve seen some seemingly frail people become expert grapplers while some stout dudes ended up quitting early on.

Instead, I went on to ask him more about his rolling and he said he tries to take things slow and easy during rolling. Now this might seem like a smart idea, and against higher BJJ belts it can be.

But as I’ll explain in the video. Rolling like this against lower belts can be downright dangerous.

Hopefully the video is useful to you with your training and hopefully helps you avoid some injuries.

The Worst BJJ Advice to give to Strong People

Don’t Use Your Strength! This is something all of us big strong people hear in BJJ from day 1. And in my bearded opinion it’s some of the WORST advice in BJJ, as I’ll explain in the video.

Now, I’m sure if you train Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and are a bit smaller, and have had the pleasure of rolling with a 200lbs+ spazzy person, you may be resistant to this idea. But stick with me in the video and I’ll explain why this advice in BJJ leads to poor performances and more injuries.

After watching the video you’re welcome to leave your comments below.

Take More Backs in BJJ with 2 Effective Techniques If They Turtle Up

In today’s basic White Belt BJJ techniques, I use as a Black Belt I’m going to show you 2 of my best back takes that work off a guard passing situation. Taking the back off of a guard pass when the person turtles up is one of my most successful ways to secure back mount in Brazilian Jiujitsu.

The back takes are simple and can be used as shown or combined together with other Brazilian Jiu-jitsu techniques. I’ve hit both of these techniques at grappling competitions like the No Gi Pans, Pans , ADCC trials and others.

Out of Shape White Belt Wants to Improve Cardio for BJJ Rolling

Today’s Q&A video is from a brand-new White Belt who gasses out too fast during BJJ training and wants to improve his cardio. Now his request is for options other than just the obvious, roll more solution.

So in this video I share 2 ideas that will help improve your cardio or “gas tank” for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I’ve kept the tips as simple as possible. Doesn’t mean they’re easy, but if you act on the 2 suggestions I give in the video I guarantee you’ll be able to roll longer and have more energy for BJJ training.

I say this from my experience and also the experience of many of my students.

If you’re struggling to roll in your gym and want to give your BJJ stamina a boost then I hope the video helps.

My Secrets to Finishing More Rear Naked Chokes in BJJ

In today’s video demonstrating the basic techniques I use successfully as a Black Belt. I’m showing you a rear naked choke. I know I know. . . fancy stuff you’ve never seen before. *please read that with the sarcastic tone that was implied.

Now I know you know the rear naked choke or strangle if you prefer. But I still people struggling to finish their chokes for 1 reason or another. So hopefully I can help you fix this in the next 10 minutes with this video if you experience this issue.

In the video I’ll demonstrate some useful details that you could add into your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu that could help make your rear naked choke finishing game much better. I’ve also included a few clips of me putting these ideas into practice.

Hope it helps!

These BJJ players are B*tching Out

In today’s BJJ Q&A video I answer a question about a Blue Belt who is smashing people in side control.

The question comes from a guy who is a higher belt in his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gym and has recently seen a Blue Belt smashing people in side control. And once he gets there he doesn’t move, he just sits and squeezes. And the higher belt is curious as to whether or not he should say something because a lot of people don’t want to roll with the Blue Belt because it’s boring to them.

In the video I give my thoughts on the situation and why I would talk to the other BJJ students (not the Blue Belt) first. Because in the end, BJJ is about being challenged. And you can’t just give up because things get tough.

Thanks for watching the video!

Take Your BJJ Stack Pass to the Next Level with These Details (Gi & No Gi)

If you’re like most BJJ practitioners, you learned some form of a stack pass very early on as a White Belt. And for good reason. It’s a strong guard pass that puts a lot of pressure on your opponent.

But like many of the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu techniques we learn early on many people exchange the stack pass for something else because they feel the need for more advanced techniques.

Well, in today’s video I’m going to show you how I use the stack pass in an “advanced” Black Belt way. This video is chock full of ideas and details that could be used for multiple positions. So, if you’re attention span has been ruined by social media this may not be the video for oyu. But assuming you’re up for learning how to take your double under or stack pass to the next level, then check the video out.

Enjoy the video. I hope it’s helpful.

Medal-Winning White Belt Obsessed with Belt Promotions in BJJ

In today’s video I answer a question from a young BJJ White Belt who’s been winning a bunch of competitions and is obsessed with the goal of getting his BJJ White Belt in 1 year. Currently he’s been training about 10 months.

Now he wants to know ideas t impress his coach which I’m not going to do since I guarantee his coach is probably impressed by his performance in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Instead I try to share some ideas on finding meaning in between the goals he’s chasing.

I do this because I had the same tireless drive towards goals when I was younger and trying to impress my coaches and teammates. And while it can produce good results it can also produce a ton of frustration because you never stop to realize what you’ve accomplished because you’re always after the next goal.

I explain the idea in more depth in the video. Hopefully the video is useful to you.

Make Your Collar Chokes in BJJ More Effective (Focus on This 1st)

In today’s BJJ technique video I’m going to show you 3 different chokes you can use from back mount with the same collar grip. I’m also going to show you what, in my bearded opinion, is the most important part of getting the choke. . . the setup.

These chokes from back mount are super simple. But I’ve used each one of them at every level of BJJ and even competitions. So they’re legit. Remember, the effectiveness of a technique depends on your skill as a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioner, not the complexity of the movement.

A lot of people in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu get excited about the finish but don’t pay much attention to the setup which is a mistake. The setup and the initial grips on the collar are the most important part of a good collar choke.

Get a good grip and your choke is much easier. Get sloppy with your grip and it’s going to be tough!

This is something to focus on when you are practicing or drilling in your gym.

Hope the video helps give you some ideas for your next BJJ training session.
