How To Make Your Armbars Safer & More Effective as a White Belt

Today’s video will show you some simple techniques to make your armbars safer and more effective as a BJJ White Belt.

The video comes from a question I got from a White Belt who’s afraid of falling off too fast with armbars from top position becuase he doesn’t want to injure his training partners or lose the submission.

So in this video I’ll show you how to use the arm you’re not attacking (when using an armbar from top) to anchor yourself to their body and slow the armbar down. This will also help weaken many of the common grips used to defend armbars.

How To Handle Anxiety Before BJJ Matches & MMA Fights

7 Butterfly Guard Sweeps to Build an Effective Sweeping Game

Today’s video is set of 7 Butterfly Guard sweeps we’ve been drilling in my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu classes (as of the time of posting this).

They’re very basic techniques. But I’ve found if you combine them together seamlessly, they’re difficult to stop. There are variations of how each move is used but these are some of mine. Hopefully they’re helpful to you with your BJJ training and drilling ideas.

How Martial Arts Helps You Build Confidence with ACTION, not thinking

Martial arts are excellent for building confidence. Obviously most of my followers are Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioners. But I know I have others that aren’t. But either way, most martial arts involve certain things that builds confidence in a person.

In this video I answer a question from a guy who’s trained Krav Maga for a number of years and is now shifting into BJJ training.

His question to me is about my ideas on competing and how I say you need confidence, but at the same time you cannot set expectations.

So in the video I’ll explain these ideas, which might seem opposed (but they aren’t) and give you some ideas on confidence and why martial arts are so effective at building it in a person.

Training BJJ This Way Helps Me Avoid Injuries & Win More Competitions

In today’s BJJ Q&A video I answer a question from a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioner who’s been called “Too Soft” by his coach. Now, Jacob, says that even though his coach says this he’s still won numerous tournaments and does well in the BJJ gym during training.

And so he was curious about my thoughts on the idea.

Now in the video I explain the style of rolling Jacob uses. And I also share why I think it’s a great idea! In fact, it’s very similar to my style of rolling at this point in my life which is I don’t like to get into gym wars every single day.

But I also share an idea bout what it would be like if Jacob was too soft during rolling.

The Next Time Your Train BJJ, Try This Breathing Technique

In today’s video I share a simple breathing exercise to try the next time you’re rolling in your BJJ gym. It’s a simple idea that can help you slow down your pace, not be so spazzy (if you’re a white belt) and even help you out last someone else.

I started doing this type of breathing back in 2018 after reading a couple of books that got recommended to be from a friend. And initially it was a struggle to breathe in the way I talk about in the video. But now after doing it for several years it’s much more natural and I’ve noticed it’s given me a clear advantage of my opponents in competitions and some of my training partners in the gym.

Stop Trying to Perfectly Balance BJJ & Life (I’ll Explain Why)

In today’s video I answer a question from a new BJJ White Belt who’s struggling to find the balance with Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and all of the other activities he does.

He says that he’s already a physically active person who does lots of other activities. And this combined with BJJ is leading to a lot of soreness, fatigue and some injuries.

In the video I’ll share some ideas on abandoning the idea of balance for periods of time in your life. I’ll share how I’ve done it in the past with various physical activities and projects.

Blue Belt Hobbyist Feels Worthless at Competition-Focused Gym

Recently I received an email from a viewer, Chris, who titled the message “Is my BJJ Gym Cobra Kai?” This of course caught my attention, so I wanted to see what his situation was. He says that the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training inside the gym is great but unfortunately the main coach he trains with is a bit of a jerk.

Recently the coach said that he’s focused on his competitors and any hobbyists need to ask other coaches for help because he doesn’t have time for them.

His primary coach saying this rubbed Chris the wrong way and created a situation where he’s curious as to whether he should leave his gym (even though he doesn’t want to) or stick it out.

In the video I’ll share some ideas that will hopefully be useful to Chris and anyone else in a similar situation.

If you struggle passing Half Guard then today’s video is for you. In today’s BJJ technique video I’m going to give you a simple strategy to chew on. It’s simple, but effective. I’ve been using this strategy ever since I was a BJJ White Belt and have used it effectively even as a Black Belt.

The key to making this work (as I’ll show you in the video) is to set up multiple threats starting with the armlock. This could be a keylock, kimura, straight armlock, whatever you’re best with.

What happens is the person will be forced to focus on the submission threat which then diverts attention away from retaining the Half Guard position.

If you don’t already do this, you should. It’s been one of my most effective ways to pass guard and it’s something you’ll see a lot of people doing in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

This White Belt is Getting Turned Down for Rolls at his BJJ Gym

If you’re a newer BJJ White Belt you may have experienced a situation where maybe someone refused to roll with you. And especially in the gym it can feel awkward and seem like a negative thing. This is the situation one of our friends has run into when he’s trained in different martial arts.

He says he’s gone to several different martial arts and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gyms, and he feels like there are cliques that develop and he gets left out. These gyms talk about being a family but it doesn’t seem that way to him.

In this video I explain why your gym may in fact be like a family, in many different aspects and why you don’t always want to interpret someone not rolling with you as a bad thing. Our gut instinct is to take it as a bad thing, but it’s not always the case.
