Common BJJ White Belt Mistake when Rolling with Coaches

In today’s video I answer a question from Asa (a BJJ White Belt) who’s struggling to roll with his Black Belt coach.

In the video I’ll explain the mistake he’s making when he’s rolling with his coach. It’s a mistake I believe we’ve all made at some point or another. And this mistake is trying to impress our coaches by rolling really well or trying to impress them. I’ll explain why this is a mistake in the video.

And if you’re a White Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu I hope this video makes sense and helps you with your training if you ever roll with your coach.

If You Struggle Breaking Closed Guard as White Belt, Then Watch This Video

A really difficult technique for many new White Belts in BJJ is breaking the closed guard. Many times when they try they get knocked off balance, have their grips disrupted or get swept in the process.

Now I honestly prefer a standing guard break to open the legs in full guard. But for a lot of people early on the lower guard breaks will be easier to use. Kind of like standing guard passes. I tend to find lower, tight, guard passes are easier for newcomers whereas standing guard passes take a bit more time to develop.

In today’s video I’m going to show you some common mistakes to avoid when breaking the guard using the low staggered hand position. This video is mostly for White Belts in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu but I’ll be honest with you. Some of the details I share in this video I didn’t learn until I had been training for many years.

So I hope this helps!

top mount

Skinny BJJ Beanpole Struggling to Hold Top Position on Bigger Guys

Today’s video is in response to a question I got from a small guy who’s struggling with big guys during his BJJ training. He’s a self-described bean pole who’s struggling to hold top position against his training partners.
He says he tries to hold mount a lot. And he also says that since he’s a good guard player he often feel comfortable to just sit back and allow his opponent’s to come up on top.

In today’s BJJ strategy video I’ll give you a few ideas to chew on regarding this situation in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, because it’s common. Keep in mind I’m not a small man. But I’ve still been with plenty of men much larger than I am who can throw me off if I get out of position.
I’ve also been coaching for over a decade and have seen how my smaller students gain the advantage over their larger opponents at time.
Now before I end this. Let me share this. I think any position can be used if done correctly. But I also believe that certain positions are easier than others for certain situations. In particular, I don’t think mount is the best position against people that are much larger than you. In the video I’ll explain why.

How To Avoid Injuries When Rolling with Wild New White Belts in BJJ

Today’s video is an idea that came from questions I received from both BJJ White Belts and higher belts who are rolling with brand new White Belts in their gym.

Basically, the White Belts are injuring people on accident or being super spazzy and feeling bad about it.

On the flip side the higher belts are worried about getting injured with the less experienced students.

So in this video I share an idea for higher belts in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu to consider when rolling with new BJJ students. It’s an idea I learned the hard way after getting elbowed, kicked, slammed over the years. But if you take the lesson home it’ll allow you to roll with newer students to help teach them and at the same time avoid being injured.

Thanks for watching and I hope the video helps.

oil check

Blue Belt Gets a “4 Finger Oil Check” at BJJ Competition

Today’s video is a question about dirty grapplers in BJJ competitions. By dirty grapplers I mean people who are willing to cheat and bend rules in order to win.

The question comes from a Blue Belt who was recently competing against a tough wrestler and got oiled checked when he sunk in a submission.

Now I was skeptical because I like to assume most people wouldn’t do something like this. But after seeing a video and picture of it I have a hunch this person knew exactly what they were doing.

Anyways, in the video I share my own experience of dealing with dirty grapplers, how I responded, how I would respond differently now and how I would encourage anyone to respond if someone does something that is flagrantly cheating.

Hopefully the video helps.

new gym woes

Blue Belt Struggling to Keep Up with Skill Level of a New BJJ Gym

Today’s video question comes from a Blue Belt who recently moved to a new BJJ gym and doesn’t feel up to the standard of the new gym. His question to me was how to deal with the situation he’s facing.

In this video I give 3 different ideas as to what could be going on and as to why he doesn’t feel up to the standard of his new Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gym. And if you’re moving to a new gym hopefully the ideas are useful to you as well!

guard sweep 2

5 Open Guard Sweeps Every BJJ White Belt Should Learn As Early As Possible

I recently did a video title: 4 Full Guard Sweeps Every BJJ White Belt Should Learn As Early As Possible. It was fairly popular and several people asked for some open guard sweeps as well.

So in today’s video I’m going to show you 5 different BJJ sweeps from 5 different open guards that even a beginner or White Belt can use. I say this because I learned all of these sweeps as a beginner. And I teach them to my students who are newer with lots of success. I can also say that I’ve used every one of these sweeps in rolling or competition against Black Belts as well, so they’re effective at any level.

Hopefully after watching you’ll have some extra ideas on open guard options in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

Oh and if you’d like to watch the original video I did from full guard.

bjj black belts

How Do BJJ Black Belts Get Their Stripes & Promotions ?

Today’s video is a quick video about how BJJ Black Belts get their stripes and promotions. So in the video I share the basics of how I’ve been promoted and how the common stripe/belt promotion practice takes place for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Black Belts.

Now, I’m sure some systems could be different than the one I outline here. But this is the basic time requirements I’m familiar with and have been exposed to in my training.

In the video I also share how old I’ll be when I can get the Red/Black and the final Red Belt of Jiu-jitsu. Since I was promoted to Black Belt when I was 26, I’ll be eligible for the final rank of BJJ when I am 89 years old.

. . . Let’s see if I even make that.

Anyways, hope the video was useful to you or at the very least maybe slightly entertaining based on how old I’ll be to get a Red Belt.

P.S Here’s the chart I was following.

only roll with high belts

Will Training with Higher Belts Hurt a White Belt’s BJJ Progress ?

If you’re forced to roll with higher belts in BJJ, will it hinder your progress? This is the question today from a White Belt who’s recently been placed into a higher level Brazilian Jiu-jitsu class.

Here’s what happened. His BJJ coach divided the training groups up due to covid concerns. He had the White Belts go to 1 class time. And then the colored belts (Blue, Purple, Brown, Black) to another. Well our friend was the lone White Belt who got plugged into the higher belt class.

So his question is about whether or not this situation will hinder his Jiu-jitsu training.

In this video I share some perspectives from my own experience in the hopes that they’ll be useful to anyone in a similar situation.

I hope the video is useful to you!

Thanks for watching.

A powerful skill every BJJ player needs (it’s difficult to develop though)

A powerful skill every BJJ player should develop is. . .

Learning when to change your game vs your opponent’s.

You see, depending on the situation you might be better served to change your plan of action. I do this all the time.

For instance, against a larger superior wrestler I’ll pull half or butterfly guard.

If I’m in top position I have specific ways of passing guard depending on my opponent’s guard style.

And I can change these before a match or even mid roll if I need. This allows me to find the place of least resistance.

And bring my strongest weapons to their weakest area.

And while it’s a difficult skill to develop, I’ve found that having your own set of rules for BJJ helps make it easier.

Your rules become a type of template or scaffolding to build on.

For example, if I am faced with a good Half Guard player I will dominate their top arm and keep my hips back. Doing this denies them the under hook and the ability to underneath my hips.

With 1 simple grip fighting technique I’m able to stop their sweeps and keep them from getting underneath my legs for leg locks.

And this is just one of the many ideas I share in my Rules for BJJ: Vol. 1 series. Besides the top arm control in half guard there are 20+ concepts and strategies that can help you formulate your own rules.

Which you can get by rolling over to the link below.

https://www.chewjitsutraining.com/rules1

Now I say YOUR own rules because there is rarely 1 way of doing anything in Jiu-jitsu.

And while many of the rules I share are timeless. You may find your own tweaks or adjustments to them.

Either way, it pays in the long-term to be a thinking-for-yourself kind of person when it comes to BJJ.

So if you jump into the members area. Dig in, but think about how it would specifically work for YOUR game.

And whether you snag the course or not. As time goes on, be on the lookout for developing strategies vs specific styles and games.
