This Technique Might Be Killing Your Half Guard (Here’s 2 Counters)

Every position in BJJ has weaknesses and strengths. Also, some techniques work very well against certain positions. The back step for instance is a great technique versus a half guard. And this is the focus of today’s BJJ technique video.

The question comes from one of the viewers who’s half guard is getting destroyed by people back stepping on him. So, in the video I’ll show you 2 options you can use in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu to counter the backstep.

Both are simple and have either been used by me. . . or against me. . . in competition.

The first one is probably the simplest of the 2. But with each one, it requires a certain timing to be effective. This is why I bring focus to the physical queue you should look for when executing the technique.

Hope the video helps if you’re a half guard player.

7 BJJ Half Guard Sweep Drills & Techniques

Today’s video is a Half Guard sweeps drilling video. This is some of the things I’m working on with my classes and I figured I’d share them with you as well.

In the video you’ll see 7 different Half Guard sweeps or techniques used. And the way we do it is after the sweep or technique is used the other person will regain their half guard and then the sequence restarts. This keeps the action moving and keeps it more engaging for both people.

If you’re a Half Guard player or trying to get better at the position, I hope the sweeping drills help.

If You Struggle Breaking Closed Guard as White Belt, Then Watch This Video

A really difficult technique for many new White Belts in BJJ is breaking the closed guard. Many times when they try they get knocked off balance, have their grips disrupted or get swept in the process.

Now I honestly prefer a standing guard break to open the legs in full guard. But for a lot of people early on the lower guard breaks will be easier to use. Kind of like standing guard passes. I tend to find lower, tight, guard passes are easier for newcomers whereas standing guard passes take a bit more time to develop.

In today’s video I’m going to show you some common mistakes to avoid when breaking the guard using the low staggered hand position. This video is mostly for White Belts in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu but I’ll be honest with you. Some of the details I share in this video I didn’t learn until I had been training for many years.

So I hope this helps!

full mount knee cut

Can’t Finish the Knee Cut Pass in BJJ? Switch to this Pressure Pass Instead

In today’s video you’ll get to watch a clip from one of my BJJ classes where I teach a guard passing technique I like using more than the cut through pass. The pass connects with the knee cut / cut through pass as you’ll see in the video.

Now the reason why I like this pass better in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is that the cut through usually doesn’t feel great on my knees. When someone holds onto the ankle if I try to finish the knee cut pass it seems to tweak my knee. So if I go for the cut through pass and it doesn’t work I’ll switch off to this pressure pass instead.

Hope the technique gives you some ideas for your next BJJ training session.

armlockin chewy

Versatile BJJ Armlock to Counter Opponents Who Crowd Your Full Guard

Today’s BJJ technique video is from one of my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu classes where I showed one of my favorite setups and armlocks from Full Guard / Closed Guard.

The focus of the setup is to get the person’s hand on the mat or on the outside of your body which will allow you to snag the arm and get a catch on the shoulder. From there I show a straight armlock and then transition to corkscrew armbar.
And even if you don’t like the techniques shown you can still use the setup for lots of submissions and attacks from full guard.
Hope the video gives you a useful idea to bring into your next training session. And hopefully it helps you secure an extra arm lock or two.

axe sweep

The Most Effective Pendulum Sweep Setup I Had Early On in BJJ

The other day I was messing around with an old Pendulum Sweep setup that I don’t really use much anymore, but that used to be one of my favorite options from Full Guard as a BJJ White Belt. Now I don’t use it much anymore because I branched off into other Jiu-jitsu positions like Half Guard and Butterfly Guard.

That said, it’s still a great setup that you can add to your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu game in order to work towards things like the Pendulum Sweep or even back takes.

I called the position “The Axe” primarily because the point of the elbow and configuration of the arm makes me think of an axe.

I also show 2 ways to get into the position.

So if you’re on the search for a setup to the Pendulum Sweep from Full Guard or just looking for some useful Full Guard sweeps to throw into the mix then I hoped the video was useful!

Thanks for watching.

butterfly pass

Showing My BJJ Students How I Pass Butterfly Guard (After Class Q&A)

Today’s video is a little different. It’s literally one of the end of class Q&A’s I do with my students. At the end of every class I bring everyone in to see if they have any questions. During the video you’ll see one student ask about passing Butterfly Guard while another student asks about Half Guard.

With the guard passing tip I explain why I prefer using the Double Under Pass even against the Butterfly Guard.

Hope you enjoy the video and get something useful for it.

flexible guard passing

Blue Belt Struggling with Guard Passing Against Flexible People in BJJ

In today’s BJJ technique video I share an idea on passing flexible people with the double under pass. The question comes from Rob who is struggling to finish the pass during his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training.
I give two different options for using the double under pass (sometimes called the double stack pass) on flexible guard players who are able to bend backwards without much issue. The pass starts off in the most basic way that many of you have probably learned and practiced since you were a White Belt.
The 1st one is an option I used successfully recently in competition. The 2nd option is one that changes the pressure up higher on the shoulders and the neck which negates the flexible muscles in their back and hips.
If you’re trying to use this pass in BJJ then I hope it’s helpful to you.

My Favorite Attacks from the BJJ Knee Cut Pass

What are some options after the Knee Cut Pass in BJJ?

This is the question for today’s BJJ technique video. In this video I show some of my favorite options after using the Knee Cut Pass.

You might also call this the Cut Through or Knee Slice Pass. Whatever you call it, it’s a great pass for Brazilian Jiujitsu and is incredibly common.

One thing that will often happen when using the pass is that your opponent will attempt to get up to their side and turn towards you. In a lot of cases I find my rolling partner or opponent digging for underhooks which is a good option for them.

When this underhook comes that’s when I spring my trap and use some of my favorite options. A lot of times in this situation I look for my Step Over to the Back. And when working with the black position.

At times I’ll abandon the traditional “Position Before Submission” attitude and just dive for a choke submission! And I’ve found that to be helpful in a lot of situations.

So check out the video and I hope it’s helpful for you! Talk to you next time!

Simple Fix to a Big Problem when Breaking Guard in BJJ

Do you have trouble maintaining good posture when breaking full guard? This is a big problem for a lot of people. . . not just White Belts.

In today’s video I’m addressing this issue as our friend is getting broken down constantly in his BJJ training when he tries to break the full guard so he can pass.

In the video I explain a little maxim or rule I have for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I picked it up from a friend and I’ve used it ever since. That is. . . the “Belly Button” rule. Basically this means.

Don’t let our body move over top of their belly button. To do so would mean that our center of gravity is right over top of their body and in a vulnerable position. This is No Bueno.

So in Brazilian Jiujitsu when we are breaking guard.

We want to make sure our body doesn’t move over their belly button or belt line. If you’re having trouble breaking the closed guard or even getting caught in certain sweeps. Then I hope this is useful to you.
