top mount

Skinny BJJ Beanpole Struggling to Hold Top Position on Bigger Guys

Today’s video is in response to a question I got from a small guy who’s struggling with big guys during his BJJ training. He’s a self-described bean pole who’s struggling to hold top position against his training partners.
He says he tries to hold mount a lot. And he also says that since he’s a good guard player he often feel comfortable to just sit back and allow his opponent’s to come up on top.

In today’s BJJ strategy video I’ll give you a few ideas to chew on regarding this situation in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, because it’s common. Keep in mind I’m not a small man. But I’ve still been with plenty of men much larger than I am who can throw me off if I get out of position.
I’ve also been coaching for over a decade and have seen how my smaller students gain the advantage over their larger opponents at time.
Now before I end this. Let me share this. I think any position can be used if done correctly. But I also believe that certain positions are easier than others for certain situations. In particular, I don’t think mount is the best position against people that are much larger than you. In the video I’ll explain why.

Effective Stretches to Fix Tight Hips for BJJ & Improve Guard Retention

Today’s video is a series of stretches I like using after BJJ training to help improve recovery from hard rolling sessions and improve guard retention abilities.

I started doing these back in 2020 to loosen up my hips while I had some free time away from the gym. I’m a person who’s not the most flexible. And by doing these stretches on a regular basis I found my hips became more flexible, my guard retention improved and I believe they help with my recovery after training.

I’m sharing them with you because I find a lot of people who come in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu classes have super tight hips. Tight hips are a problem in BJJ for a lot of reasons. And being effective off of your back is one of them.

So in the video I’ll show you the stretches and explain why I use them during.

Hope the video and the stretches help you!

The 3100 Calorie Diet I’m Using to Fuel BJJ, Lifting & Lose Weight

Today’s video is a full day of eating and a look at my 3100 calorie diet I’m currently using fuel my BJJ training, lifting and to lose weight. Last year I leaned out for a BJJ competition and it worked out great. I started at 211lbs and made it down into the mid 190s. This time around I figured I’d take you along for the ride.

The 3100 calorie diet is high protein, high carb and moderate in fats. I know for some high carbs sounds blasphemous when it comes to losing weight. But I personally feel great fueling up with carbs and training hard. That said, use whatever diet you personally prefer. I’m just sharing what I’m doing.

The diet is also 5 meals a day. Last year I was doing around 6 meals a day and it was a lot to squeeze in with my busy schedule. So I wanted to see how 5 would feel. So far so good.

Once I get down to be a little leaner I’m going to start working up slowly and increase my weight a little. And again. I’ll keep you filled in on how things are going.

If you’re interested in getting a custom diet plan you can use the same coach I have. Again, I get no kick back or anything like that. He’s just been super helpful to me and so I figured I’d share with you guy.

How To Avoid Injuries When Rolling with Wild New White Belts in BJJ

Today’s video is an idea that came from questions I received from both BJJ White Belts and higher belts who are rolling with brand new White Belts in their gym.

Basically, the White Belts are injuring people on accident or being super spazzy and feeling bad about it.

On the flip side the higher belts are worried about getting injured with the less experienced students.

So in this video I share an idea for higher belts in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu to consider when rolling with new BJJ students. It’s an idea I learned the hard way after getting elbowed, kicked, slammed over the years. But if you take the lesson home it’ll allow you to roll with newer students to help teach them and at the same time avoid being injured.

Thanks for watching and I hope the video helps.

oil check

Blue Belt Gets a “4 Finger Oil Check” at BJJ Competition

Today’s video is a question about dirty grapplers in BJJ competitions. By dirty grapplers I mean people who are willing to cheat and bend rules in order to win.

The question comes from a Blue Belt who was recently competing against a tough wrestler and got oiled checked when he sunk in a submission.

Now I was skeptical because I like to assume most people wouldn’t do something like this. But after seeing a video and picture of it I have a hunch this person knew exactly what they were doing.

Anyways, in the video I share my own experience of dealing with dirty grapplers, how I responded, how I would respond differently now and how I would encourage anyone to respond if someone does something that is flagrantly cheating.

Hopefully the video helps.

leg trip takedown

This Effective Takedown Addresses A Big Problem In BJJ When Standing

Today’s BJJ technique is one of my absolute favorite takedowns for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I demonstrate the technique in both gi and no gi.
One of the big reasons I love it so much is because many BJJ practitioners have a very passive and defensive stance with takedowns. Usually this is where their butt is waaaay back. This makes it hard for shots and takedowns.

So in today’s video I’ll show you how to do an arm drag to inside trip that I’ve been able to hit at just about every BJJ competition in the last 5 years. I also show more details and setups to this BJJ take down in my Wrestling for BJJ series which you can check out at the link. https://www.chewjitsu.net/w4bjj
I personally love anything that works off the arm drag in BJJ since no matter the defensive posture. You can always get a grip somewhere on their arms.
Hope the takedown helps and thanks for the request Michael!

This Happens When The BJJ Myth meets The Reality of Rolling

Today’s BJJ question comes from a young jacked guy who said he’s doing really well but experiencing a problem. That problem being that some of the guys he’s beating make excuses about his strength.

This is a common problem in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu where people have been conditioned to believe that technique is all that matters. And then when they run into a strong or athletic person they realize it’s not the case. That strength and athleticism plays a huge role.

In the video I answer his question and address why his more experienced teammates are so frustrated. And why it’s more to do with the person than it is with him.

If you’re in a similar situation with your training partner then I hope this video helps!

guard sweep 2

5 Open Guard Sweeps Every BJJ White Belt Should Learn As Early As Possible

I recently did a video title: 4 Full Guard Sweeps Every BJJ White Belt Should Learn As Early As Possible. It was fairly popular and several people asked for some open guard sweeps as well.

So in today’s video I’m going to show you 5 different BJJ sweeps from 5 different open guards that even a beginner or White Belt can use. I say this because I learned all of these sweeps as a beginner. And I teach them to my students who are newer with lots of success. I can also say that I’ve used every one of these sweeps in rolling or competition against Black Belts as well, so they’re effective at any level.

Hopefully after watching you’ll have some extra ideas on open guard options in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

Oh and if you’d like to watch the original video I did from full guard.

bjj black belts

How Do BJJ Black Belts Get Their Stripes & Promotions ?

Today’s video is a quick video about how BJJ Black Belts get their stripes and promotions. So in the video I share the basics of how I’ve been promoted and how the common stripe/belt promotion practice takes place for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Black Belts.

Now, I’m sure some systems could be different than the one I outline here. But this is the basic time requirements I’m familiar with and have been exposed to in my training.

In the video I also share how old I’ll be when I can get the Red/Black and the final Red Belt of Jiu-jitsu. Since I was promoted to Black Belt when I was 26, I’ll be eligible for the final rank of BJJ when I am 89 years old.

. . . Let’s see if I even make that.

Anyways, hope the video was useful to you or at the very least maybe slightly entertaining based on how old I’ll be to get a Red Belt.

P.S Here’s the chart I was following.

only roll with high belts

Will Training with Higher Belts Hurt a White Belt’s BJJ Progress ?

If you’re forced to roll with higher belts in BJJ, will it hinder your progress? This is the question today from a White Belt who’s recently been placed into a higher level Brazilian Jiu-jitsu class.

Here’s what happened. His BJJ coach divided the training groups up due to covid concerns. He had the White Belts go to 1 class time. And then the colored belts (Blue, Purple, Brown, Black) to another. Well our friend was the lone White Belt who got plugged into the higher belt class.

So his question is about whether or not this situation will hinder his Jiu-jitsu training.

In this video I share some perspectives from my own experience in the hopes that they’ll be useful to anyone in a similar situation.

I hope the video is useful to you!

Thanks for watching.
