He Feels like a Fake Purple Belt Because of White Belt Memories

In today’s Q&A I answer a question from a newer BJJ Purple Belt who says he feels like a phony. He says that when he was a White Belt the Purple Belts in his gym were absolute monsters, and he doesn’t feel like he’s a monster. He feels like he’s no where near their skill.

In this video I share some ideas on this common imposter syndrome thing. I also share why in the case of the person asking today’s question, your view of a belt from the ideas of a newbie can skew the reality of the situation.

I know this from experience as a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioner myself and as a coach who’s had numerous students say the same thing.

Whether you’re struggling with imposter syndrome because of a new belt or something else, then I hope the video is useful to you.

Hope you enjoy the video. Thanks for watching.

Purple Belt is Training Harder Than Ever but Not Improving

Today’s question is about not improving in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu even when you’re training harder than ever. This is the basic situation going on for John who’s hit a plateau in his BJJ progress. Now he says he’s training even harder than he used to in order to break out of the plateau, but he’s still stuck.

So, in the video I’ll share why I ditch rolling harder or training harder when I’m trying to break out of a BJJ plateau. Now, keep in mind I’m still training hard. I love training hard. But sometimes going even harder isn’t the best route. Keep in mind that the process I talk about in this video is mine. It might work for you, it might not. I also give some examples of what this process looks like in training during situational rolling or full rolling.

I also share a book that I enjoyed in the video. If you’d like to check it out, look at the link below. https://amzn.to/3Mqsa3h

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed the video. Talk with you next time.

These BJJ players are B*tching Out

In today’s BJJ Q&A video I answer a question about a Blue Belt who is smashing people in side control.

The question comes from a guy who is a higher belt in his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gym and has recently seen a Blue Belt smashing people in side control. And once he gets there he doesn’t move, he just sits and squeezes. And the higher belt is curious as to whether or not he should say something because a lot of people don’t want to roll with the Blue Belt because it’s boring to them.

In the video I give my thoughts on the situation and why I would talk to the other BJJ students (not the Blue Belt) first. Because in the end, BJJ is about being challenged. And you can’t just give up because things get tough.

Thanks for watching the video!

3 Tips for a Burnt-Out Black Belt BJJ Coach to Regain Motivation

In today’s video I answer a question from a BJJ Black Belt coach who feels like he’s burnt out with teaching.

His question is how I stay motivated even after I’ve been doing it as long as I have. So in today’s video I share my mindset and how I stay motivated to teach BJJ, run a gym and some ideas for any BJJ coach who might be in the same boat.

Hopefully this is helpful to you if you’re in a similar situation.

How Martial Arts Helps You Build Confidence with ACTION, not thinking

Martial arts are excellent for building confidence. Obviously most of my followers are Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioners. But I know I have others that aren’t. But either way, most martial arts involve certain things that builds confidence in a person.

In this video I answer a question from a guy who’s trained Krav Maga for a number of years and is now shifting into BJJ training.

His question to me is about my ideas on competing and how I say you need confidence, but at the same time you cannot set expectations.

So in the video I’ll explain these ideas, which might seem opposed (but they aren’t) and give you some ideas on confidence and why martial arts are so effective at building it in a person.

Hope you enjoyed the video.

Stop Trying to Perfectly Balance BJJ & Life (I’ll Explain Why)

In today’s video I answer a question from a new BJJ White Belt who’s struggling to find the balance with Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and all of the other activities he does.

He says that he’s already a physically active person who does lots of other activities. And this combined with BJJ is leading to a lot of soreness, fatigue and some injuries.

In the video I’ll share some ideas on abandoning the idea of balance for periods of time in your life. I’ll share how I’ve done it in the past with various physical activities and projects.

Blue Belt Hobbyist Feels Worthless at Competition-Focused Gym

Recently I received an email from a viewer, Chris, who titled the message “Is my BJJ Gym Cobra Kai?” This of course caught my attention, so I wanted to see what his situation was. He says that the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training inside the gym is great but unfortunately the main coach he trains with is a bit of a jerk.

Recently the coach said that he’s focused on his competitors and any hobbyists need to ask other coaches for help because he doesn’t have time for them.

His primary coach saying this rubbed Chris the wrong way and created a situation where he’s curious as to whether he should leave his gym (even though he doesn’t want to) or stick it out.

In the video I’ll share some ideas that will hopefully be useful to Chris and anyone else in a similar situation.

Thanks for watching!

A Blind Black Belt was my Toughest Training Partner as a Brown Belt

Can you become a good grappler if you’re blind? That’s the question coming to us today from a guy who’s just getting into Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and is experiencing an illness that is causing him to go blind.

In the video I’ll share several examples of grapplers I’ve met in BJJ and wrestling who are blind. I’m doing so to encourage our friend and anyone else getting into grappling who’s blind.

Thanks for watching the video.

The Depressing Side to Achieving Your Goals in BJJ

There is a danger to achieving your goals in BJJ or any endeavor you find yourself in. And that’s what we’re going to focus on for today’s video.

The question asker is Nina who says she’s in a situation where she’s accomplished several goals she had and now she’s in a situation where she lacks the same motivation and drive she used to have.

Her question to me is how can she get that drive back in her life and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training. So in this video I’ll explain the natural rhythm we all experience as we accomplish our goals and the process around that.

If you’re experiencing a loss of motivation and focus after hitting a big goal I hope this video helps!

Unlock More Discipline for BJJ with this Simple but Powerful Mindset

Today’s video comes from a newer BJJ White Belt who discovered Brazilian Jiu-jitsu like many people (at least in my gym). He started listening to Joe Rogan, then Jocko and then somewhere along the line found me.

His main question to me is about discipline. He says he wants to develop more of it but he’s never really been a disciplined person. And so, he’s wondering if I have any tips on discipline.

So, in this video I talk about what I really consider discipline. Because I think it can mean a lot of different things. And it’s not simply being a tough hard ass. As I talk about in the video. Discipline really comes down to 1 thing, at least in my view.

If discipline for BJJ training, and in general, is something you struggle with then I hope the video is useful to you.

Talk to you next time.
