A Subtle Way of Quitting During Rolling in BJJ

Today’s video comes from a guy, who we will call Bob, that has been training for a little over a year and says he really enjoys BJJ, even stating that it’s really helped him with some mental issues.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu also opened him up to aversity that he wasn’t used to. For example, he found out that he is a quitter. Whenever things start getting tough in the rolls, he just gives up. By the way, these are his words, not mine.

When his coaches initially noticed the issue, they kind of gave him a pep talk. However, over some time they just stopped trying.

His question to me is if I have any advice on how to overcome the mental block that he recently discovered when he trains BJJ, and how he can grow his “fighting spirit.”

So, in this video I’ll answer his questions and tell you guys about how I personally had to develop my own “fighting spirit” and grit through BJJ, and even tell exactly what I had to tell myself DAILY to do it. I’ll also share the rough inner dialogue I sometimes had going on in my head after training sessions.

I hope you guys can find these ideas useful.

My Health Scare is Over, Now I’m Back to BJJ Training

A few weeks ago, I mentioned that I had an issue where I had to take some time off BJJ and had to go to the Emergency room because of that health issue.

Well, today was my very first training session back in about a month and I could feel it. If you’re older and do BJJ you probably know exactly what I’m talking about.

As you age in BJJ you can really tell the difference that a long break makes. I’m not “old” in the sense of full life. But I am for BJJ. That being said, in my mid 30s I definitely don’t recover the same as I did when I was 25.

Anyways, I wanted to share a couple ideas with you guys in relation to getting back to training BJJ after a serious injury, health issue, or whatever else took you off the mat.

Hopefully you find these ideas useful to you.

A Highly Effective Mount Position in a Street Fight or MMA

Today’s video comes as an answer to a recent question from a follower, and fellow Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Practitioner, named Steve.

Steve’s question to me is whether or not I believe you should go to a low Mount or if you should get to a high Mount which is very common and very effective in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

His question is focused on which mounted BJJ position, would be more effective in a Street fight situation, against an untrained person. So in the video I share some ideas on how to use mount in a Hand-to-hand fighting situation on DUH STREETZ. And I share why I really like low mount vs an untrained person.

This Powerful Exercise Made My BJJ Goals & Marriage Better

Today’s question comes from a blue belt by the name of Tom who is curious about my advice on training BJJ while married.

Good question, since as us guys always joke “happy wife, happy life.”

Anyways, he’s wondering how to find the balance between taking care of his wife and training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu enough to do it at a competitive level.

Now, I don’t consider myself a marriage “Guru” or Counselor, but in this video, I’ll share how I found an important balance between my training and marriage. I’ll also share a simple exercise that I did with my wife that made my BJJ and my marriage better. So hopefully it will help you too if you’re in a similar situation.

Thanks for watching.

This Depressed Guy Will Need BJJ “Therapy” Now, More Than Ever

Today’s question comes from Jose who is wondering if he should keep training BJJ while going through a divorce.

He worries that he may bring some baggage from his personal life into his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gym, that could lead to some not-so-fun interactions in training and doesn’t want to ruin his relationships at the gym as a result.

In the video I give Jose, and you guys, a story about similar situation that I went through in hopes to start a conversation & to help Jose out, even if it’s just a little helpful.

This is clearly a hard time for Jose, and I hope that he finds what he needs, gets through this whole situation, and is able to get back to his normal life as soon as possible. And if you’re experiencing a similar issue then I hope the video helps.

Defending Leg Locks with No Hands & Ice Baths in The Rain

Today’s video is a kind of “fly-on-the-wall” vlog taking you through part of my morning. It starts with breakfast, BJJ training (which includes some leg lock situational rolling) and an ice bath.

Fridays are usually one of my slower days of the week and this is my usual Friday routine. The only thing missing is the reading I did prior to breakfast.

During the class we did a few different rolling drills. 1 was where we could not use our hands and our opponent’s could only submit with leg locks. Another was starting off in honeyhole and we had to either escape or submit. These drills are great for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu students trying to get more acclimated with the leg locks techniques and learning the controls of the position.

Hope you enjoyed the video and banter between me and the students in my gym.

How to Deal with a BJJ Training Funk & Create Your Own Motivation

I get questions about losing motivation all the time. So in today’s Q&A video I wanted to share an idea that’s been useful to me with motivation. Also, I’ll explain why I probably look at motivation a bit differently than you do.

Most people associated this feeling of excitement to do something with motivation. I only see that as half true. In my eyes motivation is actually created by you. And this is important because when most people don’t have that excited feeling, they feel like something is wrong and that they lack motivation. In my mind they like something else and there is a way to create motivation that’s a bit different.

Again, this is how I see it and what’s been useful to me, my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training. But it’s also been useful off the mats as well.

Hope the idea proves useful to you as well.

Slow Style of Lifting Builds Muscle & Doesn’t Ruining Your BJJ Training

Today’s video is a quick lifting tip with my coach Eli.

Over the last 3 years he’s been programming my diet and lifting routines and so I wanted to share a simple adjustment to some of your exercises that you could try out.

This adjustment will hit the muscle but allow you to use less weight to do it. Which as a BJJ practitioner I like since it allows me to load my joints a little less and still get a good lift in.

You’ll also be able to develop a bit more isometric strength by changing some of your lifts in the manner. This is great for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu since we need to have the ability to hold a push or a pull for multiple seconds at times.

So watch the video to get the tip and if you’d like to get more details on the Swole & Roll lifting program Eli and I put together just use the link below. https://www.chewjitsutraining.com/Swole

Chat with you next time.

Avoid This Mental Trap as a New Hobbyist in BJJ

In today’s video I address a common problem that affects many new BJJ practitioners, especially hobbyists.

And today’s question comes from a fella named Luke who’s a White Belt just starting out in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and he wants to learn how to maximize his progress with his 3-day a week schedule. Now, he’s not trying to be a high-level competitor, he’s not worried about belts, he’s just doing this as a journey for himself.

So, in the video I talk about this idea and why you want to avoid this idea of maximizing anything, especially if you’re a hobbyist.

Should Your Attitude Determine Your Belt Promotions in BJJ?

I recently spoke with a fellow BJJ coach who recently denied a young guy a promotion to Purple Belt because of his attitude. In particular the young Blue Belt gets very upset when he loses during training. To the point that it negatively affects his training and the environment around him.

And the coach was just curious whether or not I thought this was a good idea and my thoughts on it (from BJJ coach to BJJ coach).

So, in this video I share my thoughts on whether or not I think the coach made the right call with holding the promotion.

I hope the ideas I share in the video are useful to you whether you’re a coach or just someone training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
