Powerful Armbar Escape for White Belts with Mahamed Aly

Recently I had 2018 IBJJF World Champ Mahamed Aly out to our gym to train and do some videos.

In this video Mahamed focused his attention to White Belts defending armbars.

So in this video we show an armbar escape.

He said when he was a White Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu he didn’t want to tap and would get his arm popped all the time.

He’d leave training with sore arms. So to help White Belts and any Brazilian Jiujitsu practitioner with their ability to survive. He shows a slick armbar defense.

If you’re struggling with defending armbars then I hope this video is useful for you!

Being able to defend submissions is the focus of anyone who is new to BJJ.

Hope you enjoyed the video and I’ll see you next time!

I Love My BJJ Coach as a Person But Hate Their Coaching Style

What do you do if you don’t like the way your BJJ coach directs you at competitions or training?

This is our “Bob” question today from one of the viewers who is a Blue Belt in BJJ and dislike how their coach. . . coaches them.

They said that the coaching style is not preferable because it’s more of a barking demanding style. Meaning when competing they yell and scream to tell them to do certain things.

This disrupts “Bob” and causes them to perform worse.

This is demonstrated by the fact that when their coach isn’t there, Bob has done really well.

So in this video I talk about how to talk to your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu coach about difficult topics.

If you’re having a situation with your coach and need to bring up a difficult topic. I hope this helps.

Belt Lineage in BJJ Doesn’t Matter

Does your BJJ belt lineage really matter if you plan to teach? Of course this is my opinion, but assuming that your belt lineage is legitimate.

I really don’t think it matters as many people think. As a young coach who was a brown belt. I had an obscure Brazilian Jiu-jitsu lineage for most.

But I was still able to be successful in competitions and as a coach. I’ve grown a gym that’s nearly 10,000 sq ft and has hundreds of people training. I accomplished this not with my really cool belt lineage.

But because I was very much invested in the success of my students and my drive to help them.

Now, all that said, I think lineage can be important in a few cases. But if you’re someone who is looking to become a Brazilian Jiujitsu coach or instructor.

I think your belt lineage is less important when compared to who you are as a person and how you teach your students.

Check out this video for a more in-depth version of my opinion on belt lineage.

Can’t Finish Armbars? (Try These 2 Brutal Submissions) – w/ Mahamed Aly

Recently I had 2018 IBJJF World Champ Mahamed Aly out to our gym to train and do some videos.

In this video Mahamed shows a series of slick submission options when you’re having trouble finishing the Armbar from top position. These submission options not only give you the ability to finish the roll or match.

They also allow you to have greater control and make your opponent super uncomfortable. The slicer he put me in was awful! And the collar choke he used was no nicer!

Both of the submissions were brutal!

I like this video because it’s several simple BJJ techniques from a common position.

I think everyone who has done Brazilian Jiujitsu at some point has struggled to finish an Armbar.

And make sure to stick around for the end!

Mahamed and I share a few thoughts about training and developing a deeper more complex Brazilian Jiu-jitsu game. Hope you enjoy the video!

My Favorite Attacks from the BJJ Knee Cut Pass

What are some options after the Knee Cut Pass in BJJ?

This is the question for today’s BJJ technique video. In this video I show some of my favorite options after using the Knee Cut Pass.

You might also call this the Cut Through or Knee Slice Pass. Whatever you call it, it’s a great pass for Brazilian Jiujitsu and is incredibly common.

One thing that will often happen when using the pass is that your opponent will attempt to get up to their side and turn towards you. In a lot of cases I find my rolling partner or opponent digging for underhooks which is a good option for them.

When this underhook comes that’s when I spring my trap and use some of my favorite options. A lot of times in this situation I look for my Step Over to the Back. And when working with the black position.

At times I’ll abandon the traditional “Position Before Submission” attitude and just dive for a choke submission! And I’ve found that to be helpful in a lot of situations.

So check out the video and I hope it’s helpful for you! Talk to you next time!

How to Make Your Grips Last Longer as a BJJ White Belt

Grip strength and grip endurance is a big question for people getting into Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I’ve received questions from countless BJJ practitioners about how to build better grip strength because during their matches or rolls in the gym they feel like their grip goes out.
Today’s question comes from KevMed who says that despite weight lifting. He lacks grip strength when he is training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. In this video I briefly touch on the idea of building stronger grips and focus more on how to make your grips last longer as a White Belt.

As a White Belt I can almost guarantee that KevMed is grabbing everything with a death grip.

I say this because I know as a BJJ White Belt. . . I did. And as a coach I see this over and over again with my new White Belts.
The newer people in the gym will hold grips as tight as they can and will wear their hands out in a minute or so and then are left with nothing.
So if you’re a newer White Belt or someone who just finds themselves gripping everything as tight as possible. Then I hope this tip is helpful!

I was Rolling with Blue Belts for Black Belt BJJ Competitions

BJJ sport training is one of the only sports I’ve ever seen where there is very little methodology of how hard to train. Most sports combine some mixture of hard and lighter elements of training to round things out. But Brazilian Jiu-jitsu often doesn’t.

So practitioners often fall into this misconception that the only way to get better in BJJ is to GO HARD all the time. In today’s video I answer a question from our friend who is asking about how to roll with weaker smaller people during BJJ training.

He says this not because he wants to adjust to them, but because he implies that he isn’t going to improve if he rolls wit them.

I try to debunk this myth by sharing how I rolled with mostly White and Blue Belts for some of my early Black Belt competitions.

Very similar to weaker people in the gym. I could crush them if I wanted. But I roll with them very deliberately to improve and prepare myself for Black belt matches.

If you’re in a similar situation in BJJ. I hope this video encourages you to think a little differently about how you can train with smaller, weaker or less skill BJJ training partners. Talk to you next time!

BJJ Brown Belt Demolished a Mat Bully (Feels Upset About It)

Have you ever heard of the term “Gym Enforcer” at your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu academy? It’s a pretty simple idea. Just like the old hockey enforcers who were sent out to check certain players on the ice.

A gym enforcer is there to check certain behaviors on the mat. In this video our friend Dee was put in the position as gym enforcer by his coach.

There was a mat bully in the BJJ gym he trains at who was roughing people up unnecessary and not being safe. The coaches had talked to the guy. But he still continued. So Dee, who is a BJJ Brown Belt, was told to put it on the guy and he did.

The bad part for Dee is that the guy hasn’t made it back to training since. And he feels like maybe he ruined someone’s BJJ experience.

In this video I share that the idea of a gym enforcer in your Brazilian Jiujitsu gym is fairly common. You don’t rough people up unnecessarily but you need people to be aware of reality.

If you were on a basketball team and you had a new player who wasn’t very good, but better than some, begin talking trash to the players.

You might have one of the better players school him on the court to check the situation before it becomes negative to the whole team.

I also share how being a gym enforcer is helping maintain the safe boundaries inside of your gym and share a term I read in a book called Iron John.

The term is Walled Garden, and simply means establishing a secure place for us to cultivate ourselves. This cultivation cannot happen if people are creating negativity inside the ranks of the gym. Enjoy the video!

7 BJJ Drills to Build Quick Hips and Pass Half Guard

I talk all the time about drilling to increase Brazilian Jiu-jitsu skill. And some of my most popular videos are drills. In this video I share some drills I’ve been working on that you can use while passing Half Guard.

There are two basic sections of this Brazilian Jiujitsu drilling video. 1 section focuses in on Knee Slide and Knee Slide variations and options. The other section focuses in on Back Step options and variations.

The Back Steps are one of my favorite movements in BJJ. Not everyone uses them so the movement is weird. It’s almost like the Knight on the chessboard.

While all other pieces move in straight angles, it moves in an L and can through you off. Here are the BJJ drills shown in the video:

  • Split Leg Step Ins – This gets us into the position. * Knee Slides (focused on hip movement) – This is a basic movement drills to help develop the hip movement needed for a knee slice pass.
  • The Back Step to Monoplata Setup Position – This is a great movement to set us up for Monoplatas and a slew of other armlocks and submissions.
  • Back Step to Leg Over Pass – The Leg Over Pass can be used to counter Deep Half Guard and this drill allows us to train the movement.
  • Back Step to Back Take – Another Back Step variation for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu this time focused on getting to the back (my favorite).
  • Knee Slide to Step Over (Counter to Underhook ) – In Half Guard the underhook is key for control. But you can use it to your advantage if they beat you to it by using this counter.
  • Knee Slide to Armbar – 1 of 2 Armbar variations you can use after a successful Knee Slice pass.
  • Knee Slide to Armbar (Variation 2) -1 of 2 Armbar variations you can use after a successful Knee Slice pass.

I hope these drills are useful for your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu whether you’re a coach or a student who wants some other options for an open mat.

Why Losing Your Passion for BJJ is Normal (How to Reignite It)

This might come as a surprised for you. But I don’t think I’m passionate about BJJ, at least not all the time. Here’s what I mean. The definition for passion is “a barely controllable emotion.”

And so if we use that definition. I haven’t been constantly passionate about Brazilian Jiu-jitsu since I was a White Belt.

Now I still enjoy BJJ training, but it’s closer to a relationship.

Where it comes in ebbs and flows. Like a relationship with a person where sometimes you can’t get enough of the person and other times not so much.

And I bring this up because our question today is about losing the passion for BJJ and I hear this from people all the time. They say things like “I’ve lost the passion for BJJ.

I just doesn’t feel the same.” So you want to make sure that you’re not trying to compare your current emotions to the emotions of the past, especially the beginning.

Along with this I share a few practical ideas on how to spark the passion for your training. Like trying new techniques or options. I hope the video is helpful with your BJJ training.
