Should This Purple Belt Change Gyms or Change His Training Habits?

Today’s question comes from a Purple Belt who has an interesting question that many upper belts in BJJ might experience.

Basically, he’s realized that he’s in a gym where he’s 1 of the higher belts on the mat and the number of more experienced grapplers is getting smaller and smaller. He wants to continue improving with his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu skills, but he’s worried that without higher belts to push him it won’t happen.

So in the video I share some ideas and 2 strategies to improve even if you don’t have a ton of higher-level training partners. And if you use these strategies you might find that some of your most productive rolling rounds (as far as skill growth goes) aren’t even your hardest.

Now, if you’re at a lower experience level you can use these strategies just the same.

Thanks for watching.

Knee on Belly Escape to Heel Hook & Rolling Class (Situational Rolling)

In today’s class and rolling video you’ll get a chance to see me and my guys working on a Knee on Belly escape to backside 50/50 and then some rolling afterwards.

I got class started and then let one of our Black Belts in the gym (Evan) take over with some details on the leg locks since he’s a stronger leg locker than me.

Afterwards we had some situational rolling including some rounds of guard passing battles and dominant position. I even had a super nice Black Belt (tough roll too) from Idaho drop in for class followed by me working rounds with some of my tough young students.

Enjoy the video and thanks for watching.

Should Your Attitude Determine Your Belt Promotions in BJJ?

I recently spoke with a fellow BJJ coach who recently denied a young guy a promotion to Purple Belt because of his attitude. In particular the young Blue Belt gets very upset when he loses during training. To the point that it negatively affects his training and the environment around him.

And the coach was just curious whether or not I thought this was a good idea and my thoughts on it (from BJJ coach to BJJ coach).

So, in this video I share my thoughts on whether or not I think the coach made the right call with holding the promotion.

I hope the ideas I share in the video are useful to you whether you’re a coach or just someone training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

Escape Tight Guard Passing Positions with This Powerful Chin Grip

Do you ever struggle with people smashing you in a really tight guard passing position? Think, body lock passing, tight half guard passing, etc. Of course, right? It happens to everyone. Well here’s a simple, but powerful, chin grip that could be a game changer for you and your BJJ in these positions.

I learned this by having a smaller competitor (around 160 or so) use it against me. I remember it disrupted my guard passing positions even when I was super tight. I then started using it during my training and enjoy it when I’m rolling up against some of my larger students who are north of 250lbs.

So, give it a try the next time you need to create some space when fighting off a tight guard pass during your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training sessions.

How My Knees Feel for BJJ after Meniscus Surgery 20 Years Ago

What do my knees feel for BJJ training nearly 20 years after my 1st meniscus tear surgery in 2004? Well, that’s the question I’ll answer in today’s video.

I’ve gotten a lot of questions about this from Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioners who are either getting ready to have surgery on their meniscus tear or just recovering. So, in today’s video I’ll share how things are feeling from both of the surgeries on my knee (1 in 2004, 1 in 2014) and I’ll also share what I do that seems to help alleviate pain and keep my joints feeling healthy.

Just for the record. Both of my tears were treated with removal and not a repair.

Hope the video helps if you’re struggling with this sort of thing or if you have a surgery coming up and wondering how it will affect your training.

Getting Submitted by my Younger BJJ Students & Knee on Belly Drills

The other day I posted a BJJ video about being an older BJJ Black Belt. I know some of you said it’s only because of a belt. And that’s an easy scapegoat, but that’s not it.

Old champions and masters in other combat sports feel the similar things. I’ve spoken to champions in wrestling and kickboxing who got older and struggled with the realization that they weren’t what they used to be.

That said, I talked about it. And in today’s BJJ drilling and rolling video here’s a great example of me going through it. The video is from a training session from a few weeks ago when I was coming back from Costa Rica. You’ll see some knee on belly drills first followed by rolling. During the rolling I got subbed by a couple of my students and became the “nail” instead of the hammer. This is something I talk about in videos, but maybe it’ll be useful for you to see it too.

So enjoy the drills and enjoy watching the Chewster be the nail instead of the hammer.

Are Older BJJ Black Belts Really Even Black Belts Anymore?

Are older BJJ Black Belts really even Black Belts anymore? That’s the question I basically got asked today from several friends of mine who are BJJ Black Belts and who are also getting older.

This issue they’re running into is that as they’re getting older they’re getting beaten by many of the younger Purples Belts (and other belts) who are much younger than them and focused heavily in BJJ training.

So in the video I explain my thoughts on it and the struggle that many of us will go through if we were lucky enough to do Brazilian Jiu-jitsu when we were younger and then have the continued luck of doing it as we get older.

Hope the video helps any of you older grapplers out there.

Finish More Collar Chokes & Armlocks with a Powerful BJJ Principle

I got a BJJ question about collar chokes from Side Control. So in this video I share 2 of my favorite collar chokes from side control. But more importantly I share a principle that I use with chokes and arm attacks from every position.

The principle for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is incredibly simple to understand. But when you implement it into your game you’ll probably find that you finish both chokes and arm attacks with a higher rate of success.

If you’d like more details on the shotgun armbar be sure to check out the video series on the position here on the channel. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5…

Happy submission hunting!

A BJJ World Champ’s Drill-less “Drilling” System

I was recently asked if drilling is 100% necessary to get good at BJJ. Now, when we say drilling, I interpret this as meaning, “do we need to perform large amounts of repetitions over and over again” to an unresisting opponent.

The answer is no. There are ways to work around it. And in this video, I share an idea from a conversation I had with BJJ world champ Bernardo Faria who hated drilling moves over and over again but was very successful in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

The idea I share from the conversation is very simple and straight-forward, but the discipline to do it during training could make huge improvements in your game.

Hope the tip helps.

My 225lbs BJJ Black Belt Moves Like a Lightweight (Chewjitsu Rolling)

Back by popular demand is a video with some rolling. But as I mentioned in 1 of my past videos. I didn’t want to show crazy highlights of me trying beat up my students or anything like that. But I figured it would be fun to include you in on one of our classes.

So in today’s BJJ rolling video you’ll get to be a fly on the wall for 1 of my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu classes and hang out, learn a little Jiu-jitsu and even catch some of the banter and friendly trash talk in between rolls.

The class was focused on triangle defense and counters as well as breaking the guard. So after technique we did a lot of rolling focused on the guard passing battle and rolled with a special rule where a person wins if they lock guard. I explain why in the video.

Hope you enjoy the clips from class.
